F.D. Millet: Forgotten Influence

York City, talks about the key influence Francis Davis Millet, who was a Met Museum Trustee, had on
19 th Century American Art and his influence in helping American Art move out of the realm of
“Decorative Arts” and be accepted around the world as “Fine Art.”

Description
Stephanie L. Herdrich, Alice Pratt Brown Curator of American Painting and Drawings, at the
Metropolitan Museum of Art, addresses how the Met, and FD Millet, led the movement to accept
“American Art” as “Fine Art” through its pioneering American collection and exhibitions in the 19 th
century.
Park Avenue or 7th Regiment Armory Veterans Room
Description
Kirsten Reoch, Consulting Curator, at the Park Avenue Armory, addresses the incredible American
Aesthetic Movement design work completed in the Veterans Room, under the direction of Louis C.
Tiffany Associated Artists. FD Millet and George Ewell completed the “History of War” frieze that
surrounds the Veterans Room.
American Academy of Arts and Letters
Description
Cody Upton, Executive Director of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, speaks to the long and
distinguished history of the Academy since 1898. Francis Davis Millet was inducted into the prestigious
academy in 1910, which mostly recognized outstanding writers, as a part of the expansion of the
academy in 1908 to more fully recognize leading painters and other artists. Millet remained a member
until his death in 1912.
