Faint signature lower right. Cracqueluere throughout, has had restoration work in the past, areas of paint loss upper right and lifting of paint at sitter’s waist.
Fragmented museum label stretcher bars verso. Family notes and appraisals indicate the sitter as Millet’s wife, Elizabeth, Lily, or daughter, Kate, in Elizabethan costume. Millet painted in Europe and America alongside John Singer Sargent, John LaFarge and William Morris Hunt. After Millet’s death, Lily disposed of his costume collection that numbered around 2,000 costumes. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY holds some of the pieces Lily donated there, and the London Museum, London, England also still has some items identified as coming from Millet.
