Brigham Young University Museum of Art - Provo, Utah

Brigham Young University, in Provo Utah, has a fine art museum that holds a good collection of Broadway Colony members work. They also hold a beautiful color painting of Thesmophoria that was produced by Frank as the design for a life-size mural for the Bank of Pittsburgh. That mural is now,
unfortunately, destroyed when the bank was torn down. They also hold an Augustus St. Gaudens plaque of Millet.

Broadway Museum – Broadway, England

Broadway is in the far southeast of Worcestershire, close to the Gloucestershire border, midway between Evesham and Moreton-in-Marsh. It is sometimes referred to as the “Jewel of the Cotswolds”.
In the 1880’s Frank and Lily Millet purchased a home in Broadway and from that base a “colony” of luminaries gathered around them. The Broadway Museum, on High St. in Broadway has multiple Millet items on display and from time to time hosts exhibitions about various members of the Millet’s Colony of friends.

Brooklyn Museum of Art – Brooklyn, New York

The museum holds a Greek revival oil painting by Millet, An Autumn Idyll, 1892.

Carnegie Museum of Art – Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

During his lifetime Millet worked closely with Andrew Carnegie and the museum, and the museum owned many Millet paintings. Unfortunately, over the decades most have been sold. However, they do still hold a nice oil portrait and one of the only known bronze plaques that Millet every produced, both images ae of Anna Pearson Hall a young daughter of a prominent Pittsburgh family.

The Costume Institute @ the Metropolitan Museum of Art

There are 26 costumes, in the Costume Institute collection, from the Millet collection of over 2,000 costumes Millet held during his lifetime. Most of the original Millet collection of costumes are lost. The Costume Institute’s collection of more than 33000 costumes and accessories represents five continents and seven centuries of fashionable dress.

Detroit Institute of Art - Detroit Michigan

In 1883 the Detroit Institute of Art opened its doors for the first time, and following their first exhibition, by popular demand, the very first painting they ever purchased was Millet’s Reading the Story of Oenone. Such was the interest in Greek revival painting and Millet being at the center of the movement, was a major artist producing Greek revival work.

Morris Museum of Art – Augusta, Georgia

The Morris has preserved the history and culture of the South for more than twenty-five years and has an extensive collection of artists working in the South since the founding of the country until today. The Major Butt portrait by Millet was acquired from the family, who has been a major part of the Augusta community for generations.

Museum of Fine Arts, Boston – Boston, Massachusetts

The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, has a very long history with Millet. He was one of the founders of the Museum School of Art and placed his close friend, Otto Grundmann as the first director of the school. The MFA holds several important Millet works. Tate Britain Museum - London England

The Tate, has two museums, the Tate Modern is the more well-known situated on the Themes River in a renovated power plant. The oldest museum of the pair of the museums is the Tate Britain located in the Millbank part of London since 1897. It holds, a major Millet oil painting, Between Two Fires, circa 1892.

Harvard University – Harvard, Buildings, Library & Museums – Boston, Massachusetts
Millet received his BA and Masters from Harvard in the 19th century. Along with Millet items in the Harvard Museum and Library, Millet was commissioned with Tiffany to design two stained glass windows for the Annenberg Memorial Hall. The Harvard library also, has a number of historical documents about his time at Harvard and his life following Harvard in their, Hollis for Archival Discovery site.

National Academy of Design – New York City, New York
Formerly known as The National Academy Museum and School of Fine Arts, the museum was founded in New York City in 1825 “to promote the fine arts in America through instruction and exhibition.” Membership in the Academy is limited to 450 artists and architects based on recognized excellence and extraordinary contributions to art. The National Academy of Design holds a significant collection of American art. With nearly 8,000 works of art it was largely assembled through donations. Unfortunately, as of a 2019 the 200-year old National Academy of Design decided to permanently close its museum operations and has no plans of reopening its doors in the future for public viewing, however, researchers can access the collection by request. Most of the collection is currently housed in Wilmington, Delaware.

New Bedford Free Public Library – New Bedford, Massachusetts
The library owns a large Millet colonial revival genre painting, Black Sheep. It also has several letters of correspondence about the mural the library had commissioned for their dome which was never completed because of Millet’s death. Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp – Antwerp, Belgium
The library of the Academy holds files of artwork produced by the student’s during the 19th century. Millet’s silver medal drawing, Naukydes Discobolus, discus thrower, is one. Access can be arranged through the librarian by email, via their contact page.

Antwerp City Archives: Antwerp City Archives, houses the Academy’s 19th century records. Access to the years of Millet attendance, 1872- 1873 is best done with the assistance of a City Archivist, through email.

Salmagundi Club – New York City, New York
Founded in 1871, Salmagundi Club is a private members only club focused around the fine arts. It purpose since its founding by artists and patrons, is to support one another and to encourage the advancement of art of all kinds. As a small part of their fine art collection, the hold a large group of palettes, from many of the 19th century’s foremost painters, Millet among them.

Tufts University Archives - Medford, Massachusetts
The archives hold some substantial scrapbooks and histories of the creation of the Boston Museum School of Fine Art. Millet was instrumental in the creation of the art school and the scrapbooks hold photos of several of his Greek costumes. The archives also hold letters and records of Millet’s sister Lucia Millet (Edlund). Lucia, lived with the Millet’s for years and was an important helper to Lily, with the children.

Union League Club - New York City, New York
Founded in 1863 as a social club in New York by citizens to help preserve the Union. The club has had many prominent civic, state, and national leaders as members, including 15 Presidents, as well as leading officers of major corporations. They have an extensive art collection, often enlarged by donations from the members or purchased through their art exhibitions. Among their collection is At the Inn, painted by Millet in 1884.

Commission of Fine Arts – Washington, DC

Commission of Fine Arts was founded by President Taft when he made Daniel Burnham, Chair and Francis Davis Millet, Vice-chair. Their first commission was to plan the Washington Mall, as well as the design and placement of the Lincoln Memorial that we know today.
