Medium:  Painting – oil on canvas

Description

Painting signed FD Millet.

“The Black Hat” original painting on canvas is currently lost.  The only image we have of it is from a photo taken by the Detroit Publishing Company that ceased business in 1924.  The Library of Congress has a B/W image of it as well, but the two images are in reverse of each other.  We suspect that the color image of the painting may be correct, but that is a best estimate based on Millet’s other colonial genre works.   Both images are shown here.

Provenance:

Some history of the painting exists.  Library of Congress records show it was once held by the Colorado Historical Society in 1949 and the image taken by the Detroit Publishing Company is dated 1912, the year of Millet’s death.
