Description
The illustrated print is likely a German print based on the “Der Leibesbrief” or love letter title printed on the border. Print shown is an original 1912 black and white halftone print of the original painting by Millet. There are several print versions in the marketplace.
The original oil painting shown in 1888 at the Royal Academy is currently, whereabouts unknown.
However, several of the Millet furniture pieces shown in the painting, some of which were used in other works as well, were offered for sale with the appraisers comments, and are shown below:
A GEORGIAN STYLE OVAL BRASS BOUND MAHOGANY
CELLARETTE. 19th century. Brass knob, flanking loop handles, bands and
casters. No metal lining. 24 1/2” h x 26” w x 18 1/2” d. Hinges are not original.
AN ENGLISH HEPPLEWHITE STYLE MAHOGANY SIDEBOARD WITH
STRING INLAY AND BRASS RAIL. Late 19th Century. Prince of Wales
Feathers’ brasses are not original. Figured panel of crotch mahogany between
the two drawers. Supported on tapering legs with string inlay. 41 1/4” h x 82
1/2” w x 28” d. Veneer losses to banding and loss of brass rails that fit between
the brass posts for the gallery.
PAIR GEORGE III INLAID MAHOGANY CUTLERY URNS (KNIFE
BOXES), STEPPED DOME TOP WITH ACORN FINIAL, RIBBON INLAY,
ON SQUARE BASES. 26 1/2” h. Some veneer loss on one base.
