Description

The verso (Back) of the “Woman at her Spinning Wheel” painting.

A mention of a painting titled “Choe” (at her spinning wheel) is made in a newspaper clipping kept in a Millet Family scrapbook. Please see image in the upper righthand corner of the photograph.

Unfortunately when the clippings were cut at the time of the news reports, critical reviews, or exhibitions etc they often did not cut or note the publication and date.  However, in this case we know that the critic reported favorably on “Baby Worship” and “Chloe” in the same review, so we have some idea of the creation date of “Chloe” circa 1880 and its general image of a young woman at a spinning wheel.  We also have an exhibition entry of “Chloe” in 1880 at the MFA Boston exhibition that year.
