The Mural Painters Society, founded in 1895, published a small book in 1916, Brochure of Mural Painters of all Mural’s in the US, where they were & who painted them. The forward to the Society’s publication was written by E. H. Blashfield, at one time recognized as :”The dean of mural painters in the US,” was a close friend and collaborator on mural projects with Millet.
So with Millet’s death in 1912 it is very likely that Blashfield would have made sure all of Millet’s mural works were properly assembled and documented in the publication. For example, of Millet commissioned Blashfield to do a mural for the Manufacturers Building at the 1893 Columbian Exposition and they both did murals for the Bank of Pittsburg. Sadly, that building has been destroyed and along with it both murals. An preparatory sketch painting of Millet’s mural for the bank, Thesmophoria, is still in existence, at BYU Museum of Art, Provo, Utah. An article, and Carnegie Library letter about the destruction of the Bank of Pittsburg Thesmophoria and Blashfield’s mural “Pittsburg offering its steel and Iron to the world,” laments the loss.
Though Millet was not the most prolific mural painter, every mural project which he undertook was hailed as a new achievement of the day. The following links are to a few of the articles about Millet and his mural projects:
