Royal Cortissoz a noted art critic of the 19th Century, publish his book, American Artists, through Charles Scribner’s Sons.  It has multiple copyrights from 1913-1923.  Cortissoz wrote about artists and their work that he knew personally.  Chapter 15 of the book is devoted to Millet.  Cortissoz, was to say the least a Millet fan.  However, as a highly regarded art critic he also knew great artwork when he saw it.  In Millet he describes the great person that Millet was and the significant work he produced, both with brushes in hand and away from the paint in the living world.
