Description
Sidney Dillon (May 7, 1812 – June 9, 1892) was an American railroad executive and one of the US’s premier railroad builders. He was actively involved in the construction of numerous roads, his largest being the Union Pacific Railroad.
Little is known about where this painting was completed, however he was involved with the Golden Spike ceremony joining the Union Pacific and Southern Pacific railroads in northern Utah. The National Portrait Gallery purchased the painting from the Pocatello, Idaho YMCA which is relatively close to where the celebration joining the two halves of the transcontinental rail system was held.
