The catalog of the Guild of Boston Artist’s show in 1999 describes the painting as follows:
“This is an oil sketch of a kitchen which Frank Millet did while on a trip to Sweden, Denmark and Northern Germany to gather information of a series of articles in Harper’s New Monthly Magazine. On June 25, 1882, Frank visited a large peasant’s house where he ‘sat down and began to make a note of the interior,’ of a kitchen which combined as a living room and bedroom. On March 6, 1914, Swedish Kitchen was sold as lot No. 53, for $40, at Millet’s estate auction in the American Art Galleries, New York.”
