Description

The Millet portrait of Mary Ogden Adams, wife of Charles Francis Adams Jr. while well executed lacks the “family” constant of the dark maroon background found in her husbands portrait and that of his other ancestors.  It however, does show her in a relaxed mood, though not showing as much confidence and power as her husband does in his portrait with him sitting in his formal attire.  Mary is sitting on a tapestry type cloth and the background is a muted grey with hints of maroon and she is dressed a little less formally than her husband is in his portrait. Overall lending a softer tone to the work.
