Description
The painting was likely done circa 1873-74 by Millet following his graduation from the Royal Academy in Antwerp, when he moved to Italy for several years and set up a studio in Venice. During this time he painted a number of paintings from scenes all around the country, including Venice, Naples and Capri. Copy work was a very prevalent technique practiced by artists to expand their skill.

The painting was owned by family members from Millet’s lifetime. In October 2023, it was placed for auction through Embassy Auctions International, Kinzers, Pennsylvania, with a presale estimate of $8,000. The painting was accompanied by a letter from the family detailing the provenance down through the family.
